Aging At Home
The Danger of "The Long Lie" (Delayed Response)
The Hidden Trap: Less than half of older adults who fall tell their doctor about it, often out of fear of losing their independence.
The Escalation: Falling once completely doubles a senior’s chances of falling a second time.
The Long Lie: When a senior lives alone and cannot get up after a fall, spending more than 1 hour on the floor dramatically increases the risk of dehydration, muscle damage, hypothermia, and long-term hospitalization.

The Hidden Dangers
Aging at Home & Injury Statistics
The Leading Danger: Falls are the absolute leading cause of injury and injury-related death for adults aged 65 and older.
The Frequency: Every single second of every day, an older adult in the U.S. suffers a fall. That adds up to roughly 36 million reported senior falls every year.
The Household Hazard: Over 50% of all senior falls happen directly inside the home.
The Severity: 1 out of every 5 falls results in a serious injury, such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or a broken bone. In fact, falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in seniors.
Hip Fractures: More than 95% of senior hip fractures are caused by falling. Tragically, one-fourth of seniors who fracture a hip will die within six months of the injury.
The Cost: In the U.S., the total medical costs associated with older adult falls exceed $50 billion annually.

Flashlight Drive
When the power goes out, a simple flashlight can literally be a life saver
Bo s Battery Repair is hosting a community Flashlight Drive to collect reliable, easy-to-use flashlights for our local seniors. Our goal is to ensure that no elderly neighbor is left in the dark during a sudden blackout.
Why This Matters: The Hidden Danger of Blackouts
For most of us, a power outage is a minor inconvenience. For an older adult, it is an immediate safety hazard. Inadequate lighting in the home is already one of the top environmental causes of dangerous slips and trips.
The statistics paint a sobering picture:
The Reality of Falls: According to the CDC, more than 1 in 4 older adults experience a fall each year, making falls the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for those 65 and older.
The Blackout Spike: Recent national studies show that prolonged power outages directly spike emergency medical crises for seniors, contributing to thousands of excess emergency hospitalizations nationwide due to the immediate stress, loss of climate control, and lack of visibility.
When a home suddenly goes pitch black, finding a clear path or navigating stairs safely becomes incredibly difficult. By providing local seniors with a dedicated, reliable flashlight, we can give them the immediate visibility they need to stay safe until the lights come back on.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
When natural disasters or extended power outages strike, seniors face a severe disadvantage due to lack of preparation and physical barriers.
The Kit Gap: Studies show that less than 12% of older adults have actually invested the time or money to prepare an emergency supply kit, identify evacuation routes, or participate in response drills.
Living Alone Increases Risk: Seniors who live alone are 36% less likely to keep a properly stocked emergency kit and 41% less likely to have ever had a conversation with family or friends about an evacuation plan.
Power Dependency Vulnerability: Seniors who rely on electricity-dependent medical equipment (like oxygen concentrators or dialysis machines) report a massive lack of confidence in surviving a power outage lasting more than 24 hours.
Evacuation Barriers: Physical decline, slower walking speeds, or a reliance on canes, walkers, and wheelchairs drastically delay urgent evacuations. Furthermore, hearing and vision impairments make navigating unfamiliar, chaotic disaster surroundings highly dangerous.
